Session 1: Diamonds
Botswana has long been a beacon for both diamonds and Africa: it’s a model of sustainable and ethical diamond mining and it remains one of the top mining destinations in the world chiefly as a result of its strong governance. Is the updated deal between the GRB and De Beers genuinely transformational for the diamond industry, Botswana and De Beers?  The Debswana mines are in the second half of their lives where margins will begin to decrease and Botswana remains, to a large extent, chiefly reliant on diamond revenues.  The updated deal talks to increased goods flowing through ODC, more local beneficiation and a fund to help decrease Botswana’s reliance on diamonds, amongst other important items.  The deal also talks about joint (and own by the GRB) exploration efforts, both in Botswana and elsewhere to replenish existing diamond resources.

Because the ‘Energy Transition’ has become a global political agenda, rather than a necessity, and noting that the science, as defined by politicians, is definitively not settled, the empirical and physical impacts of this transition in terms of demand and supply availability, have to be understood and widely informed to the population at large - to ensure the desired outcomes are first reasonable and second, both achievable and sustainable for the long term.
